SS 11 An International Perspective on FOTs for Nomadic Devices in Vehicles
Tuesday, 26 October, 16:00 – 17:30
|
|
Organizer
- Petri Mononen, TeleFOT Project Coordinator, Senior Research Scientist, Technical Research Centre of Finland - VTT, Finland
Description of the Session
The increasing role of ICT supporting mobility makes it important to know the impacts of nomadic devices on driving. The European project TeleFOT aims to assess the impacts of functions provided by aftermarket and nomadic devices in vehicles, and raises awareness of their traffic safety potential. TeleFOT INCO project supports international cooperation between TeleFOT and the sister projects SafeTrip-21, (University of California and NAVTEQ, USA), VMC (ETRI, Korea) and Ubiquitous Transportation Systems (KOTI, Korea). The main common factor that the involved countries share is the use of nomadic devices as one platform for informing drivers of events and conditions which have significance to their travel. This session gave a detailed overview of the similarities and differences of FOT approaches in these three different parts of the world. The session also provided a working example of hands-on cooperation across the Atlantic and Pacific - one that has been implemented despite challenges.

SS 49 Cooperative Systems: Will Field Operational Tests Show Us the Deployment Path?
Thursday, 28 October, 16:00 – 17:30
|
|
Organizer
- Maxime Flament, Head of Sector - SafeMobility, ERTICO - ITS Europe
Description of the Session
During the last decade, cooperative systems have been held up as one solution to the problems faced by road operators and car manufacturers. Around the world, Field Operational Tests for Cooperative Systems have taken place and more are being planned to assess the improvements that these systems can bring in the efficiency of the transport system, in the safety of all road users and in making individual mobility more comfortable. In Europe, before any decision for full-scale deployment can be made, large-scale test programmes are planned aiming at a comprehensive assessment of the efficiency, quality, robustness and user-friendliness of close-to market systems.
Daimler and ERTICO - ITS Europe jointly presented the current plans in Europe. US DOT and NHTSA gave a critical commentary on the IntelliDrive program and the US’s overall evaluation and research framework. Finally, the Japanese Cabinet Secretariat gave an overview of the country’s deployment activities.

SS 61 Intelligent Vehicle Field Operational Tests around the World
Friday, 29 October, 09:00 – 10:30
|
|
Organizer
- Maxime Flament, Head of Sector - SafeMobility, ERTICO - ITS Europe
Description of the Session
Previous experience worldwide has shown that Field Operational Tests (FOTs) are an excellent method to collect real data about specific systems on vehicles, evaluate their impacts and eventually improve them to better fit customer needs or even find innovative new applications. FOTs have proved to be a powerful tool for gaining insight into the usability of functions when operated in the real environment, and for a sufficient long time to reach the daily operational and behavioural level. This session presented major activities related to intelligent vehicles FOTs: FORD Europe and ERTICO - ITS Europe jointly presented euroFOT activities to test 8 intelligent vehicle systems across Europe including fleet status and early insights of the results after 6 months of operations. Honda presented its current FOT activities in Japan and the next steps. VTTI focused on its Naturalistic Driving studies and related them to the development of future ADAS. VOLVO/Chalmers presented some insight methods for deeper analysis of the collected FOT data in order to better understand how ADAS contributes to avoid accidents and save lives. Finally MLIT presented the assessment of effects of Advanced Safety Vehicles technologies and the next steps.
