Conference Future Directions in Speed Management, 23 February 2010 Excessive or inappropriate speed has a singularly devastating impact on health and safety of road users, increasing both the risk of a crash and the severity of crash outcomes. It is estimated that speeding contributes to as much as one third of all crashes resulting in death, and is the most important contributory factor to road deaths and injuries. Yet there are numerous measures that can be deployed to manage speed: action can be taken in all of the road safety pillars, and by all actors involved in the road transport system.
This conference also marked the end of ETSC’s “ShLOW” project financed by the European Commission under the 7th research framework programme.
“ShLOW” is a competition among students from across Europe who ran individual campaigns/actions to reduce speed at the local level, and the three best students were handed an award during this event.
