PROLOGUE workshop on naturalistic driving - Feb 18, Brussels

1st PROLOGUE workshop

The project Promoting real Life Observations for Gaining Understanding of road user behaviour in Europe – for short PROLOGUE (Seventh Framework Programme of the European Commission) - aims to contribute to reducing the number of road casualties in Europe by further developing and testing the naturalistic observation methodology.

On 18 February (11:00 to 16:30) the first PROLOGUE workshop was held in Brussels. The workshop focused on the potential of naturalistic driving for different user groups, the experiences so far and the expected added value of a European naturalistic driving study.

All PROLOGUE User Forum Members and interested parties, in particular those persons who were interested in traffic safety and new research methods were welcomed to attend.

The programme of the workshop was the following:

  • Rob Eenink, PROLOGUE's principal investigator and coordinator gave an overview about the PROLOGUE project
  • Ludger Rogge, PROLOGUE's project officer at the European Commission commented on Naturalistic driving from the European Commission's perspective
  • Ken Campbell, Chief Safety Program Officer SHRP2, USA reported latest news from SHRP2, the American Naturalistic driving program
  • Michael Gatscha, senior researcher at Test&Traning International, introduced the audience to the P-drive system for data collection and processing
  • Fridulv Sagberg, senior researcher at the Norwegian Institute for Transport Economics presented the results of the questionnaire survey and state-of-the-art analysis
  • Adriaan Heino, representing the Achmea Insurance Company, provided insight to the interests of the insurance industry concerning the naturalistic driving methodology

After these introductory speeches there was plenty of time for discussion in two working groups.
